Our work is impossible without your donationsAll donations are tax-deductible; we are a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. If Americans Knew is currently raising funds for our next fiscal year, which begins in July 2009. Although many people think we are a large organization due to the our widely varied projects and professional approach, we are actually a very small operation. Our entire annual budget is only $150,000. We are almost entirely dependent on donations from individuals around the country. Below are some of our main ongoing projects. Please donate as much as you can! Let us know which projects you are most excited about in a note. Ongoing ProjectsIn addition to doing research, writing articles, calling the media, providing radio commentary, putting on workshops, and consulting with other groups, the following are some of our major ongoing projects. Speaking ToursExecutive Director Alison Weir, and occasionally others, give presentations around the country. These are extremely well-received. We are frequently contacted by people who tell us that hearing Alison’s speech changed their lives. Audiences leave informed on the history and current situation in Palestine-Israel and motivated to help bring change. Local organizers usually cover basic travel and accomodation costs for Alison to give talks on their campuses or elsewhere, but many cannot cover honoraria, promotional expenses, or pay for the valuable educational materials she brings to distribute to audience-members. Donations help make up this deficit. WebsiteWe provide one of the only entry-level websites on the Israel-Palestine confict, containing statistics for both populations side-by-side; synopses of the history and major issues; details of the media distortion across the mainstream spectrum; and explaining the fact that current US policies are not only devastating for Palestinians (and dangerous for Israelis, as well), but also extremely damaging to US interests. Our aim is to provide a valuable resource to both veterans who have been working on this issue for decades as well as to people completely uninformed about even the most basic aspects of the conflict. Without continued funding, our website would quickly become outdated and this important resource would be lost. Educational MaterialsWe have created some of the most effective booklets, fact sheets, brochures, posters, flyers, and videos to educate Americans. We work tirelessly to make sure they are fact-filled, compelling, and professional. Donations allow us to print materials or manufacture DVDs in large numbers, which significantly decreases the price per unit and allows us to distribute these in vast quantities throughout the country. While some individuals and organizations are able to cover the basic printing and shipping costs for the materials they distribute, we also provide these free to those who cannot. We believe that getting the information out to the widest possible audience is essential. Your donations will enable us to continue to provide these for free or at-cost. Israel-Palestine: The Missing HeadlinesWe have recently created a blog containing ‘the news most Americans aren’t getting’ relating to Israel-Palestine. Studies show that U.S. news coverage is consistently Israeli-centric. The main bureaus for CNN, Associated Press, etc. are located in Israel and largely staffed by Israelis. Because the U.S. gives Israel $7 million per day – more than to any other nation – we feel it is essential that we be fully informed on this region. This blog features an assortment of news reports and commentaries – from the serious to the light – to augment mainstream coverage. Media MonitoringWe conduct statistical studies of media coverage of the issue, monitor mainstream news reporting, publish articles exposing media distortions and omissions, and contact the media with corrections and news tips. Over the years, there have been many times that our phone calls have led to incidents being reported that otherwise would have been omitted. |
